Michaela

I’d only been in Italy for two hours and I was convinced I’d met the world’s worst taxi driver. He shouted at every driver who passed him, waving his arm furiously out the window. Stop signs were only a suggestion to him, and he used his horn as a warning that he was about to break some traffic law so move out of his way.

We’d been in his car for more than an hour and I was holding on to Hunter’s knee and the door handle when he turned to Hunter and said, “Siamo qui.”

“Michaela, we’re here,” Hunter translated for me.

“Oh, thank God we’ve made it here alive.”

Hunter smiled and paid the driver while I got our suitcases from the trunk. The trunk was locked, so I knocked on the car to get the driver’s attention.

“Stai attenta,” he shouted and walked back to open the trunk.

Hunter joined us and helped with the bags. We had barely taken a step back when the car took off and left us in its dust. I wiped my mouth. I didn’t enjoy the irony of that turn of phrase.

I looked around and, for the first time, really took Italy in. Earlier, I was terrified of taking my eyes off the road, so I didn’t get a chance to enjoy the views.

I thought my mom was from northern Italy, but whomever she’d corresponded with lived here in the south. We were in a little village called Gioiosa in Reggio, Calabria. We stood in front of a stone apartment building, maybe three or four stories. On each floor, there were balconies with red-painted railings and clothes left hanging to dry.

The street was narrow—a big SUV would probably take up most of the space between the buildings. The cobblestoned path twisted and turned into other streets leading to more of these quaint buildings.

An older woman in the building across the road sat on her balcony staring at us. I waved my hand to say hello. She didn’t wave back or move at all; she just stared. Two little boys were kicking a soccer ball two doors down from us. I raised my hand to wave at them but snapped it back down. I didn’t want to risk another rejection. It would be humiliating in front of the older woman.

“Is this our Airbnb?” I asked Hunter while he searched for a key underneath the entrance mat. He found it and beamed up at me.

“Yes. Our host Domenico said he would come by later this evening to ensure we’ve settled in.”

“He just left the key under the mat where anyone would find it?” I asked.

Hunter looked up and behind me to the older woman. “I think they have pretty good security around here. The owner would be instantly notified of any suspicious intruders.”

Hunter opened the door and we went inside. Like the street, the inside hallway was narrow and tiled with terracotta stone. The white concrete walls looked as though they had been freshly painted, and the drapes were a beautiful white frothy material that billowed at the bottom.
